Rottweilers Save 80-Year-Old Woman, Lick Her Until Help Arrives

Anyone whos ever subscribed to the stereotype that rottweilers are all dangerous dogs should definitely take a look at this story.

An 80-year-old woman faced near tragedy when she fell in a field in Gloucestershire, England, getting stuck in a bush for more than 15 hours. But, the U.K.s Daily Mirror reports, four rottweilers came across the woman and saved her life.

Dave Malt and his nephew were taking Tillie, Billy, Gerrard and May all rottweilers for a walk when they let the pups roam off their leashes. They reportedly bolted to the spot where the elderly woman lay, with Malt following behind. He came across the prone woman with one of his dogs gently licking her.

The woman was promptly taken to the hospital, where she was treated for the effects of exposure and is recovering from a scary fall all thanks to the keen noses of Tillie, Billy, Gerrard and May.

This story is another reminder that the rottweilers reputation is often a misconception. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the breed as an inherent protector, the Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment.

While some rottweilers can be protective or aggressive, there are many that are as mild-mannered as a mouse. And there are also ways to curb aggressive behaviors in dogs. Writes the American Rottweiler Club:

For us, it is the best breed in the world, but it is not a dog for everyone. They require a calm, stable and firm pack leader or they will assume that role for you. They need socialization, exercise and stimulating mental challenges. With these things, you will have a wonderful companion; without them, your Rottweiler may become destructive and out of control.

Rottweilers have been targeted by breed-specific legislation, or laws that ban the ownership of certain dog breeds based on often-unfair stereotypes, in recent years. But, according to the AKC, with the right treatment, rottweilers can be perfectly loving (and lovable) pets and, as these four hero pups have shown, they could even save a life.
