Many of us have grown up knowing that Bruce Jenner was a hero, but on Friday night, during his interview with Diane Sawyer, we got to witness his heroism firsthand. The US Olympic gold medalist, who is often considered to be one of the greatest athletes in the world, came out on 20/20 as transgender, and bravely told Sawyer he identifies as a woman.
He held back tears during the interview, but never lost his sense of humor. He said that one of his biggest dreams was to simply wear nail polish long enough for it to become chipped.
This morning, an Australian radio station, KIIS 1065, wanted to show support for Jenner, and they began the viral challenge #PaintYourNailsForBruce. The goal is to break down gender roles, and to show the transgender community that there are kind people who will accept you just the way you are.
KIIS 1065 offered free manicures to any man willing to come to the station, and the hashtag has been growing since. Hopefully, because of Jenner’s courage to tell the world about his transition, and the outpouring of support from his family and fans, the world might become a little easier place to live for those who struggle with their gender identity.
